As Christmas approaches, it is hard for us to imagine children going without the basic need of a winter jacket and wellington boots to keep them warm in the cold months across the festive season and into 2023. Figures show that one in three children in Glasgow are living in poverty and they won’t have the appropriate clothing required to keep them warm.

To help support these children and families, hub West Scotland is proudly launching their fifth Winter Warmer Appeal alongside charity partner PEEK (Possibilities for Each and Every Kid). Like last year’s campaign, hub West Scotland is asking generous Glaswegians, businesses, individuals and its supply chain partners to donate as many new winter jackets and wellington boots as possible to the charity PEEK.  In order for PEEK to get these items to those who are most in need across Glasgow we need your donations by Friday 16 December 2022.

PEEK works hard to improve the life chances of children and young people living in the Glasgow area. Currently, it is especially tough for many across the city, but more than ever it is especially tough for those in poverty who are already dealing with the demands of everyday life such as heating their homes and feeding their children.  Providing an essential winter jacket and wellington boots for their children can simply be beyond their reach.

The Winter Warmer Appeal generates a fantastic response each year and reaches those who need it the most. This year, hub West Scotland is asking for help from the public and companies in Scotland (and beyond) to make the appeal even bigger and better.

A JustGiving page has been set up so people and companies can donate directly to the appeal. 100% of the money raised will be used by PEEK to purchase warm clothing and boots for those children that need it right across the city. The JustGiving page can be found at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/hub-west-scotland-winterwarmer22

Alternatively, new winter jackets and new wellington boots can be purchased online and sent straight to the team at PEEK at their headquarters: The Legacy Hub, 301 Springfield Road, Glasgow, G40 3LJ.

Michaela Collins MBE, CEO of PEEK said:
“This winter, the cost of living crisis means families are choosing between food and fuel. No child should be going to bed hungry or cold. A winter jacket is an essential item but will be beyond the reach of many families that we support, especially this year. With your support, we can ensure that children can still play outdoors and attend school in the cold dark months and not have to worry about being cold. Please do what you can to make a real difference to children living in poverty in Glasgow by donating to hub West Scotland’s Winter Warmer Appeal.”

Iain Marley, Chief Executive of hub West Scotland said:
“Once again, we are reaching out to partners and others that are able to support the Winter Warmer Appeal on behalf of PEEK and the communities that need our help.

This is the fifth year of the appeal and it coincides with an even greater scale of challenges facing those in need.  Every contribution makes a huge difference to children and families in our communities so we ask that organisations and people are as generous as you can afford to be”.

Nancy Clunie, Headteacher of Dalmarnock Primary School said:
“The practical support of giving children and families new winter jackets and new wellington boots last year meant that children could access school and play whilst staying warm and dry.  The support from PEEK and hub West Scotland is invaluable and this year especially so with so many families suffering financially from the impact of the cost of living crisis.”
