Financial Close has been achieved on contracts for a new state-of-the-art Health & Care Facility in the Parkhead area of Glasgow. Hub West Scotland are delighted to have reached this significant milestone with their partner NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) together with Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership, Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council. The project will start on site in spring 2022 with an anticipated completion of the main building in the summer of 2024.
The facility will be a genuine landmark development: in addition to being the largest of its kind in the country, it will contribute to the Scottish Government’s net zero carbon objectives by avoiding reliance on fossil fuels and supporting the Health Board in achieving Scotland’s first working net zero carbon health and social care facility. It has been conceived and designed with reference to place principles and this is reflected by the facility incorporating a public library and learning and development training facilities.
The new community facility will improve access to services and better integrate health and social care teams and services along with stakeholders from the voluntary sector and local community. The project design was led by the team at Hoskins Architects supported by Aecom, Currie and Brown, ERZ Landscaping and JGA Fire Engineer. BAM Construction will be responsible for the construction phase.
The £72m Centre is the tenth Health & Care Centre facility to be delivered by Hub West Scotland for NHSGGC, as part of a £200M investment programme.
Iain Marley, CEO of Hub West Scotland commented: “We are thrilled to be proceeding with the construction phase and to continue our highly valued partnerships with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Glasgow City Council and BAM Construction.
“This exemplar net zero carbon development will provide high quality facilities that enable transformational improvements in the delivery of health and social care services.
“In addition to enhancing the future delivery of community services, our focus on maximising benefits for local communities is ensuring that the project brings value through the creation of new jobs; apprenticeships and training, and business opportunities for local businesses.”
John Donnelly, NHSGGC’s Head of Capital Planning said: “Thanks to the support of the Scottish Government and our partners, we’re getting close to our goal of providing a new hub to help improve the health and wellbeing of people and communities across the North East of Glasgow.
“The hub will be the largest primary care development we’ve ever committed to and a pioneering project, as our first ever net zero carbon facility. It is our firm belief that the hub will be a beacon for sustainability, as well as a focal point for improving lives within the local area.”
Sharon Wearing, Chief Officer, Finance and Resources in Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) said “I am delighted to see the great progress that has been made in getting such a major project to this stage. The hub will allow us to improve the quality of health and care services for the residents of north east Glasgow by co-locating teams and services in one place at the heart of the community; this will mean that people will be able to access the support they need, alongside excellent community resources, helping to reduce inequalities and improve health.”
Councillor David McDonald, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, said: “Glasgow City Council has invested £2.5 million into the North East Hub to facilitate the relocation of Parkhead Library, and I’m pleased that the Scottish Government has backed these plans. This state-of-the-art neighbourhood facility is a great example of co-locating services and partnership working, and will offer a one-stop-shop for a range of services from Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life and HSCP.
“We all have a role to play in enabling the city to improve not only the health and wellbeing of our citizens, but also to tackle the global climate and ecological issues we are facing. This net zero carbon facility will help us to continue to develop a better city for everyone while also supporting the people of Glasgow to better engage with their communities; creating opportunities for people of all ages to gain access to information and resources to help them build and live better lives. I look forward to seeing the work begin on-site in spring.”
Jim Ward, Regional Director, BAM Construction said: “BAM are delighted to reach financial close on the new North East Hub Health & Care Centre for our client Hub West and their participant NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
“BAM have been working on the preconstruction phase of the project for the last two years and during that period we have also carried out the advanced demolition works to allow us to make a meaningful start on the construction works.
“We are delighted that this project provides us to further opportunity to deliver a high-quality project in conjunction with Hub West and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde having successfully completed Clydebank Health Centre, Greenock Health Centre and Stobhill Mental Health Wards in recent years.”
Gordon Gibb, Director, Hoskins Architects said: “After several years of hard work by the whole team, we are thrilled that this project has reached another milestone. The project will regenerate an important site in the Parkhead area of the city and, as with all our Hub projects, we look forward to seeing it transform users’ healthcare experiences and to delivering a building that truly benefits the whole community.”
